HOW IT WORKS

The Procedure of MUN

A quick guide for first-timers to understand the flow of a committee.

Step 1

Roll Call

The committee begins! Delegates answer "Present" or "Present and Voting". This sets the quorum for the session.

Step 2

General Speaker's List (GSL)

The default state of the committee. Delegates give broad speeches outlining their country's stance on the agenda.

Step 3

Moderated Caucus

A structured debate on a specific sub-topic. Delegates speak for a set time (e.g., 60 seconds) when recognized by the chair.

Step 4

Unmoderated Caucus

Informal lobbying time! Delegates leave their seats to form blocs, negotiate, and write working papers together.

Step 5

Draft Resolution & Voting

Blocs present their solutions (Draft Resolutions). After a final debate, the committee votes to pass or fail them.

Do I need to be a fluent public speaker?

Not at all! Model UN is a learning platform. Many first-timers discover their voice during the conference. The chairs are there to guide you.

What is a Position Paper?

A position paper is a short essay detailing your assigned country's policies on the committee's agenda. It helps you research and prepare before the conference begins.

What if I get nervous and forget what to say?

You can always refer to your notes! Furthermore, during Unmoderated Caucuses, you will work in teams (blocs), taking the pressure off individual speaking and focusing on collaboration.

What is the dress code?

Western formals (suits, blazers, skirts/trousers) or traditional Indian formal wear. The key is to look professional and diplomatic at all times.

How do I research for my portfolio?

Start with a CIA World Factbook search for your country's basics, then look for their past statements on the UN website or major news outlets regarding the specific agenda.

Will there be specialized or crisis committees?

While the exact committee matrix is tightly under wraps, we are planning rigorous and dynamic simulations designed to test even the most veteran delegates.

What is the marking criteria?

Our Executive Board evaluates delegates based on diplomatic conduct, substantive knowledge, lobbying skills, and the ability to formulate realistic resolutions.

How will awards be decided?

Awards (Best Delegate, High Commendation, Special Mention) are holistic. They aren't just for who speaks the most, but for who drives consensus and embodies their country's foreign policy accurately.

Can we draft crisis directives instead of resolutions?

Yes! In Crisis or specialized Indian committees (like Lok Sabha), standard long-form resolutions are often replaced by rapid-fire directives or communiqués to handle immediate situations.

How do I deal with aggressive delegates?

Maintain diplomatic decorum. The Executive Board heavily penalizes hostility. Counter aggression with kindness, parliamentary rules, and robust, irrefutable arguments.
